Special Coverage on the DAC Opening

Official Opening Ceremony of DAC

The first ever Digital Art Center of Taiwan was finally unveiled to the public on June 28, 2009!

MRT Zhishan Station is renowned for its natural realm and remarkable cultural diversity and is where Digital Art Center Taipei is located. With DAC’s integration of technology and artistic creation, it is impossible for one to imagine that the very same venue was previously used as a livestock product market. At this moment, the building has been transformed into a digital art R&D platform and has gradually become a digital art research base to help Taiwan further overseas art exchange.

On June 28, Mayor Hau, a well-respected member of Taipei City, personally showed up at the event. He sincerely hopes for DAC to promote resource integration of technology and art in Taiwan. Numerous representatives from the academic, industrial and government sector accompanied the mayor, standing together hand in hand to activate the sound device of the first permanent collection of DAC Taipei—“Speaker Tree”, the artwork of Wei-hao Tseng. This artwork signifies the missions of DAC Taipei: “R&D, experimentation, creation and incubation”, and the concept of an R&D exchange platform.

To celebrate the opening of DAC Taipei, Chun-fu Ma’s was especially invited by DAC to take part in the two-man exhibition. He displayed his work, “Kodomo Manufacture.” Children, hung on a conveyor belt like pigs, are displayed in the exhibition space, reminding us that the DAC venue was a former livestock product market. Each child was manufactured in a unique way, just like the newly established DAC Taipei, a newborn that needs to be taken care of. Ya-lun Tao’s “The Light of Historical Ending” aims to explore mutilated living organisms. Time and space are controlled and terminated by light to symbolize digital art creation’s unlimited potential with an attempt to push art boundaries in the foreseeable future.

Apart from the two-man exhibition, other artworks were also exhibited at the scene, such as: an interactive virtual audio book wall and eBar- Sumeru Sarsapa, courtesy of FBI Lab of Taipei National University of the Arts, etc. It was DAC’s first exchange and collaboration with a school since its inception.
